Motivation for Change: Inspiring the Next Generation of Social Service Leaders

Faculty of Business and Administration (FBA) at the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted Mr. Nermin Cocalić, Chief of the party from Institution Sumero, on December 11, 2024, as a guest speaker in the Introduction to Management course. The event, organized by Professors Dr. Senad Busatlić and Dr. Aida Akagić Hodžić, attracted an audience of approximately 150 students eager to learn about the role of social services in society.

Institution Sumero, originally established by Union Sumero in the 1960s, focuses on empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve independence and secure their rights in accordance with international conventions. During his lecture, Mr. Cocalić highlighted the essential services provided by the institution and shared insights into the unique challenges of working in the social services sector.

Addressing the topic of motivation in this field, Mr. Cocalić emphasized that social service professionals often face dissatisfaction and various negative factors that can impact their enthusiasm for the work. Despite labor market demand for professionals in social policy institutions, he pointed out that intrinsic motivation and human-centered skills are crucial for success. “Empathy, excellent problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills are vital,” Mr. Cocalić explained, emphasizing that these attributes, rather than financial rewards alone, sustain individuals in this demanding yet fulfilling career. He also spoke about key motivational factors such as energy, direction, and persistence, which drive professionals to remain committed to helping those in need.

Throughout his lecture, Mr. Cocalić inspired students by shedding light on the profound personal fulfillment that comes from supporting vulnerable communities. “The true magic lies in helping others and contributing to their independence and well-being,” he concluded, urging students to look beyond financial incentives and recognize the human value of social work.

The event offered students a valuable opportunity to understand the realities of social services while gaining a deeper appreciation for the impact of such work on individuals and society. It also served as a call to action for young professionals to consider careers in this essential yet often underappreciated field.

FBA remains committed to creating opportunities for students to engage with experienced professionals, enhancing their understanding of diverse career paths and societal contributions.
